Industries:

Rye’s Pass exists for hospitality and protection, a stopping point for travelers constructed along one of the most dangerous areas of road.

Lodging houses and restaurants as well as trading posts line the edge of the road, and artificial iron-supported ledges embedded in the steep slope below the main road form additional streets and an infrastructure against travelers falling to their death.

Common Architecture:

Many structures are part stone, and the remainder dug into the side of the mountain including a series of tunnel “streets” resembling horizontal mine shafts with businesses and homes formed by carving out rock and soil and then constructing walls and facades.

Wood and iron roofing is common, with reinforced wooden shelters covering many of the homes and roadway to protect against rockslide and avalanche.

Terrain & Geography:

Rye’s Pass is constructed at the narrowest and highest pass in the northern mountains. The road travels at the top of a ledge nearly 250 meters above the creek that forms the passage through the mountains, with a slope averaging between 60 and 80 degrees at most points below and above the pass.
