A vicious hunter and scavenger especially for its size, the Velociraptor has now spent years as a misunderstood media darling thanks to misinformation provided to amusement park patrons and the media by the International Genetics Corporation.
Related to the Deinonychus and Utahraptor, Velociraptor Mongolensis is the most common and truest form of Velociraptor. Standing approximately 3 feet tall and 6 feet long from nostril to tailtip, our observations show that this feathered predator eats primarily smaller prey although they will also scavenge fresh kills and even attempt to ‘steal’ kills from larger predators. Unlike their larger Deinonychus cousins, Velociraptors are primarily solitary or travel with a mate but not in organized packs.
Velociraptor means “Swift Hunter,” and they live up to the name with running speeds of over 24mph (39kph). Unlike the prehistoric records, named Mongolensis for their location of discovery, the Velociraptors under our study are registered as Velociraptor Crichtonii, named for one of our research sponsors.
